INTELLIGENT LIFE

Since the dawn of civilisation humans have dreamt, drawn and told stories about imaginary creatures. These creatures are deeply embedded in our cultures from centaurs, to mermaids, to angels. This fascination with what is out there, with what could exist except from ourselves is age old and continues into our modern world in films such as Avatar and Star Wars.

Yet how plausible are both these old and new imagined creatures? We know that every creature that ever was, or ever will be is bound by the laws of physics. Laws that govern what an organisms body plan can be and what it can not.

Inspired by the organisms on Earth and what might have been in our evolution alongside imaginary creature art, I will prototype hypothetical intelligent life that could evolve and then pick them apart by scientific reason to work out the most feasible alternatives.

There are so many intriguing questions - Could there be intelligent life that could fly? or live under the ocean? Could they have more than 4 limbs?

Would they be different from us as they independently evolved on another world? Or will their evolution converge upon similar solutions to ours resulting in them being similar? This is a profound question, at the heart of understanding ourselves and our place in the universe.
